Two months ago I visited my family in India. I had not been to India in four years; I last went when I was shopping for my wedding. I realize that I will not be able to travel to India as often as I did when I was younger. Spending time with my family and my husband's family made me feel very connected to my cultural and familial roots. I recognize that as I get older, it will be up to me to continue the traditions of our families. |
I think one of the easiest ways to keep in touch with one's culture is through food. With that logic, I made it my New Year's resolution to start cooking at least one Indian meal a week. This blog will follow my attempts at making various Indian dishes--from my mother's Maharastrian dishes to Gujarati dishes passed down from my mother-in-law, as well as other recipes to accommodate my and my husband's slightly Westernized palates. |
Often when people think of Indian food, they think of dishes overloaded with butter and cream. It is also my goal to keep the meals as healthy and fresh as possible. I hope you enjoy the recipes and stories behind each dish. My goal is to inspire others who are intimidated by Indian cuisine to just give it a try, the same way that I am. |
